PM calls 'emergency meeting' as anger soars over inflated elec bills
Amidst a wave of nationwide protests and a surge of hashtags denouncing exorbitant electricity bills, interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has convened an "emergency meeting" on August 27 (Sunday) in response to the growing outrage over electricity rates.
The caretaker Prime Minister has called for the meeting to be held in Islamabad, focusing on the pressing issue of electricity rates and the burdensome bills faced by consumers. During this meeting, the energy ministry and electricity distribution companies are expected to deliver comprehensive briefings, laying the groundwork for discussions aimed at providing substantial relief to consumers grappling with escalating electricity costs.
The mounting public outcry, backed by traders' associations, has galvanized large-scale protests across the country. The demonstrations, spanning various cities, have finally compelled the government to address the concerns surrounding inflated electricity bills and hefty taxes, signaling a turning point in the discourse.
A notable protest in Karachi, supported by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), fervently demanded a reduction in the ever-climbing electricity prices and the additional taxes tacked onto power bills. At the forefront of the demonstration, trade leaders and JI representatives voiced their apprehensions, resoundingly rejecting the unjustifiable charges levied by K-Electric in electricity bills. They affirmed JI's unwavering commitment to champion the masses' grievances, stressing that the party consistently stands up for their concerns.
Amid the demonstrators' chants and fervor, JI's Karachi Amir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman issued a stern warning, cautioning that the government's continued imposition of burdens on the public could potentially exacerbate the situation. He emphatically highlighted that their battle is against the unchecked influence of power wielders in KE, highlighting the party's dedication to being a true advocate for the people.
In other parts of the country, similar protests unfolded against supplementary electricity charges. From Lahore to Quetta, Peshawar to Multan, and a slew of cities in between, citizens joined forces to vocalize their discontent against the surging electricity bills. The collective roar of voices reverberated in unison, as people from various walks of life participated in these demonstrations, underscoring the gravity of the issue.
As the nation's streets are adorned with banners and resonant slogans, the power of the people's unity is making an undeniable impact, pressuring authorities to address the matter at hand. With a human touch, the frustration and determination of the populace have ignited a movement, forcing a reckoning on the critical issue of electricity rates and bringing forth a renewed sense of hope for change.
