PTI's Imran Khan selects Geoffrey Robertson KC, a renowned human rights lawyer, for international legal representation amid "unlawful detention and human rights abuses" charges. Khan, currently incarcerated since an August 5 Toshakhana case conviction, faces a three-year jail term and Rs100,000 fine. Despite the Islamabad High Court overturning the conviction, he remains in custody due to a cipher case until September 13, involving state secrets under the Official Secrets Act.
PTI officially announced the decision on their X account, sharing Doughty Street Chambers' post, a UK-based barristers' chambers. In their tweet, they revealed that Imran Khan has enlisted Geoffrey Robertson KC to handle his international legal battles related to unlawful detention and human rights violations.
Geoffrey Robertson KC, a founding head of Doughty Street Chambers, boasts a distinguished career as a trial and appellate counsel, an international judge, and an author of leading textbooks. PTI leader Sayed Zulfi Bukhari also echoed the announcement, highlighting Robertson's track record in successfully representing individuals facing human rights abuses, including unlawful detention.
This decision comes as Imran Khan seeks to navigate complex legal challenges and secure his rights in the international arena, drawing parallels with high-profile cases represented by Geoffrey Robertson, such as that of Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
