General Asim Munir, Pakistan's COAS, called upon the UN for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, aligning with UN resolutions and the Kashmiri people's aspirations. This occurred during the Islamabad preparatory meeting ahead of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial, co-hosted by Pakistan and Japan under the theme of "Safety and Security of Peacekeepers." Gen Munir acknowledged the UN's vital role in global peace maintenance, highlighting the growing challenges faced by peacekeepers. He emphasized the need for more effective peacekeeping in addressing complex threats while ensuring the safety of peacekeepers.
Pakistan envisions a peaceful region fostering prosperity through trade, transit, and investment across South, West, and Central Asia. Under Secretary General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix expressed gratitude to Pakistan for hosting the event and its valuable contributions to global peace. Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani emphasized Pakistan's longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping over six decades, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for peace, including 171 Pakistanis.
The UN Peacekeeping Ministerial is a significant event held every two years, with participation from foreign and defense ministers. The 2023 ministerial will take place in Ghana, following a series of preparatory meetings, including one hosted by Pakistan, aimed at improving UN peacekeeping operations in specific areas.
Pakistan has actively contributed to UN peacekeeping, being one of the largest troop contributors since 1960. Over 230,000 men and women from Pakistan have participated in 46 UN peacekeeping missions across the globe. Regrettably, 172 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Pakistan's hosting of the preparatory meeting underscores its unwavering commitment to UN peacekeeping for maintaining security and stability in various conflict zones.
