Arshad Nadeem Ends Pakistan’s 32-Year Wait with a Historic Gold Medal at the Olympics

 

Arshad Nadeem has etched his name in history by becoming the first Pakistani athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. His outstanding performance in the javelin throw not only secured him the gold but also ended Pakistan's 32-year-long wait for an Olympic medal.

On a memorable night at the Stade de France, Arshad set a new Olympic record with an astonishing throw of 92.97 meters, marking the best performance of his career. His incredible achievement is now the sixth-longest javelin throw ever recorded globally. Despite a foul on his first attempt, Arshad quickly made up for it with his record-breaking second throw, surpassing the Olympic record set in 2008.

Arshad’s final throw in the competition also exceeded 90 meters, making it the second time in his career that he has achieved this remarkable distance. He previously crossed the 90-meter mark at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he clinched the gold medal with a throw of 90.18 meters.

In this thrilling final, India’s Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion and long-time rival of Arshad, secured the silver medal with an impressive throw of 89.45 meters. Anderson Peters of Grenada took home the bronze with his commendable performance.

Pakistan’s First Individual Olympic Gold Medalist

Arshad Nadeem’s gold medal is a historic first for Pakistan in individual Olympic events. He joins the ranks of the country's legendary athletes, becoming only the third Pakistani to win an Olympic medal. Before Arshad, wrestler Muhammad Bashir won bronze in Rome in 1960, and boxer Hussain Shah won bronze in Seoul in 1988.

Arshad’s victory is also significant for Pakistan as it marks the first Olympic medal for the nation since 1992. Moreover, Pakistan’s wait for an Olympic gold medal had stretched back even further, with the last one coming in 1984 at the Los Angeles Olympics in field hockey.

With Arshad’s latest triumph, Pakistan’s total Olympic medal tally now stands at 11, including four golds, four bronzes, and three silvers. Of these, eight medals have been won in hockey, with the remaining three in javelin throw, wrestling, and boxing.

Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar affectionately referred to him as “Shehzada” (Prince), and Professor Adil Najam expressed his joy with the words, “You’ve made our hearts happy, Shehzada.”

Even the national cricket team joined in the celebrations, with a video circulating on social media showing the players eagerly awaiting Arshad’s throw and then jubilantly celebrating his achievement.
