Sri Lanka Triumphs Over India in Second ODI with Jeffrey Vandersay's Six-Wicket Haul

 


In a thrilling encounter at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka secured a 32-run victory over India in the second ODI on Sunday. The highlight of the match was Jeffrey Vandersay's exceptional performance, claiming six wickets and steering Sri Lanka to a crucial win.


Sri Lanka, opting to bat first after winning the toss, set a target of 241 for India. The hosts posted a competitive total of 240 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Avishka Fernando led the charge with a solid 40 off 62 balls, while Kusal Mendis chipped in with 30 runs. The middle-order struggled, but Kamindu Mendis (40) and Dunith Wellalage (39) made valuable contributions to stabilize the innings.


India's bowlers had their moments, with Washington Sundar taking three wickets and Kuldeep Yadav adding two to his tally. Despite their efforts, Sri Lanka managed to put up a challenging total.


Chasing 241, India started strongly with an opening partnership of 97 runs in 13.3 overs between skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Sharma's explosive 64 off 44 deliveries and Gill's steady 35 off 44 deliveries laid a solid foundation. However, India's middle order faltered under pressure. Axar Patel fought valiantly with a knock of 44 runs off 44 balls, but it wasn't enough to rescue India.


Five of India's batters were dismissed for single-digit scores, including golden ducks for Shivam Dube and KL Rahul. Vandersay's exceptional spell of 6/33 in 10 overs dismantled India's batting lineup, with support from skipper Charith Asalanka, who claimed three wickets.


This victory gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, after the first ODI ended in a tie. The decisive performance by Vandersay and contributions from the Sri Lankan batsmen were key to their triumph, setting the stage for an exciting series finale.
