From Jandola to Islamabad: The Tale of Resistance and Reckoning

Nestled in the Tank District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Jandola was a peaceful tehsil until 2007, when the Taliban infiltrated the area and began targeting the Pakistan Army. Despite the presence of troops, the soldiers operated under strict orders of restraint, maintaining a cautious stance to avoid collateral damage.

However, a sudden missile attack by a local chieftain on an army checkpoint changed everything. The attack claimed the lives of 18 soldiers, leaving a captain severely wounded. This act of violence awakened the deeply entrenched bonds within the 35 FF unit, which had lost its comrades.

For military personnel, a unit is more than an assignment—it’s a family forged through shared hardships, battles, and sacrifices. With their patience stretched thin, the unit retaliated with full force. Civilians were evacuated, and the surrounding villages were purged of insurgents.

As a symbolic gesture, the injured captain was later brought back to the same post, standing triumphantly where insurgents had once threatened his life. The lesson was clear: provocation has limits, and when crossed, the response is unequivocal.

November 26, 2024: A Night of Reckoning in Islamabad

The events of Jandola eerily mirrored what transpired in Islamabad in late 2024. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a political force once nurtured by the establishment, had been engaged in escalating protests. While protests are a democratic right, this time, the situation spiraled into violence.

On the night of November 26, a black SUV rammed into three Rangers personnel, killing them instantly. This was seen as a direct act of aggression. By 3 AM, the operation began. Blue Area, Islamabad's business hub, plunged into darkness as the lights were turned off. Within minutes, the area was cleared, leaving no trace of the protestors who had swarmed the capital earlier.

Reports of gunfire added to the tension, but investigations revealed a fascinating tactic: the use of dummy bullets. These rounds create the sound of gunfire but lack the projectile, effectively dispersing crowds without causing harm.

The parallels with Jandola were striking—once the boundaries of tolerance were crossed, the response was swift and decisive.

PTI’s Tumultuous Rise and Fall

PTI's story began with the establishment’s backing. Founded by retired military officials, the party rose to prominence with the help of strategic funding, media campaigns, and alliances with influential figures like Jahangir Tareen and Aleem Khan. By 2018, PTI had cemented itself as a dominant political force, supported by military and judicial leaders like General Bajwa and Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.

However, Imran Khan's tenure as Prime Minister was marred by missteps. From alienating key allies like Saudi Arabia to attempting to interfere with military hierarchies, his leadership decisions sowed seeds of discord. The tipping point came on May 9, 2023, when PTI supporters attacked military installations, marking a breach that could not be ignored.

Despite losing favor with the establishment, PTI continued to stage protests. But the November 26 incident, with the death of Rangers personnel, shifted the dynamics irrevocably. It was no longer a political protest—it was a confrontation with state institutions.

Imran Khan’s Critical Errors

While Imran Khan’s political journey had moments of brilliance, it was his strategic errors that overshadowed his achievements. Three key mistakes stand out:

  1. Challenging the Military: His public criticism of military leaders, including General Bajwa, alienated an institution that had once been his strongest ally.
  2. Fomenting Division: PTI’s rhetoric deepened societal divides, turning political disagreements into personal animosities that fractured families and communities.
  3. Destroying Neutral Journalism: Khan’s era polarized the media, forcing journalists to take sides. This undermined the credibility of independent journalism and stifled constructive debate.

Institutions Over Individuals

Pakistan’s history is a testament to the resilience of its institutions. Leaders come and go, but the military, judiciary, and bureaucracy remain constants, adapting to evolving challenges. The PTI saga underscores this reality.

The fall of Imran Khan’s government and the subsequent turmoil within PTI highlight a universal lesson: personal ambitions must align with institutional stability. Similar parallels can be drawn with Donald Trump in the U.S., whose confrontations with American institutions only resulted in his political isolation, while the institutions endured.

The Way Forward for Pakistan

The events of November 26, 2024, and the years leading up to it are a stark reminder of the delicate balance required to govern a nation like Pakistan. The military’s role in maintaining stability cannot be overstated, but democracy remains essential for long-term progress.

Imran Khan’s journey from a cricketing legend to a polarizing political figure offers valuable lessons. His refusal to reconcile with key institutions and his confrontational approach created unnecessary conflicts. In doing so, he alienated allies, divided the nation, and eroded the foundations of independent media.

Pakistan now faces a critical juncture. To move forward, it must bridge its divides, strengthen its institutions, and uphold democratic values. As history shows, no leader can rise above the institutions that hold a nation together. It’s a lesson Imran Khan learned the hard way—a lesson Pakistan must not forget.

Conclusion
The story of Jandola and Islamabad serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of crossing institutional boundaries. While political battles will continue to shape Pakistan’s future, its stability will always rest on the enduring strength of its institutions. For leaders and citizens alike, understanding this balance is crucial for a prosperous Pakistan.
